Part 0 — Start here

0.1 Setup: rustup, cargo, rust-analyzer, clippy

# Install the toolchain manager (macOS/Linux). It installs rustc, cargo,
# rustfmt, clippy and the standard library docs.
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh

rustc --version # the compiler
cargo --version # build tool + package manager + test runner
rustup update # Rust ships a new stable release every 6 weeks
rustup component add rust-src rust-analyzer clippy rustfmt
rustup doc --std # the standard library docs, offline

Editor: install rust-analyzer (VS Code extension "rust-analyzer"). It shows inferred types inline. When you are learning Rust that is the most useful feature an editor can have, because most confusion is about what type a value has and who owns it.

Lab machine: Parts I–III and V–VII run on macOS or Linux. Part IV (Systems Rust) needs Linux, because /proc, namespaces, and cgroups exist only there. Use the same lab VM or container you built in the OS guide §0.3:

# A disposable Linux box with Rust, from macOS:
docker run --rm -it --privileged -v "$PWD":/work -w /work rust:1 bash
