Part XIII — Reading the source: popular open-source JavaScript, in depth
Reading production source code is how you go from knowing JavaScript to understanding it. Library authors use the event loop, closures, prototypes and V8's performance model (Parts I–VIII) under real constraints: a size budget, millions of users, years of bug reports. This Part reads four libraries that each cover a big idea:
| Library | Version read | Big idea | Ties back to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preact | 11.0.0 | a virtual DOM renderer + hooks in a few KB | §33, §36, §12 |
| @preact/signals-core | 1.14.4 | fine-grained reactivity: push dirtiness, pull values | §33, §53 |
| Zustand | 5.0.15 | a whole state manager in ~20 lines + useSyncExternalStore |
§6 closures |
| Hono | 4.13.13 | edge routing with one regex, and middleware as an onion | §62, §9 regex |
All excerpts are quoted from the published npm packages at those versions. For each library, the chapter also builds a mini version of the core idea and runs it, so you can check your understanding against working code.
69. How to read a large JavaScript codebase
Opening src/ and reading top to bottom does not work. These do:
- Start from the public API and follow one call. Pick one thing a user
does (
render(<App/>, root),signal.value = 1,app.get("/x")) and trace it all the way down. Ignore every branch your call doesn't take. - Read what was published, then the repo.
npm pack preactdownloads exactly what users run. Many packages ship readablesrc/next todist/, and that is what this Part quotes. The repo adds tests and history. - Read the tests first. Tests are executable documentation of the edge
cases the authors care about.
test/usually beatsdocs/. - Use the debugger, not your imagination. Put a breakpoint inside
the library in DevTools (Sources →
node_modules), with source maps on, and step through a real interaction. "Blackbox" (ignore-list) the frameworks you aren't studying so stepping skips them. - Ask history why.
git log -S "queueMicrotask" -- src/finds the commit that introduced a line, andgit blameplus the linked PR explains it. Odd-looking code usually has a bug report behind it. - Rebuild the core in under 100 lines. If you can't write a mini version, you haven't understood it yet. Every chapter here ends with one.
Reading minified code. Preact's internal property names like
_vnodeand_depthare mangled to short names like__vin the build, using amangle.jsonfile. If you readdist/, you'll see__v. If you readsrc/, you'll see_vnode. Usesrc/for understanding anddist/for debugging production.
